How Did Ancient Cultures Measure Time?

How did the ancient Yisraelites measure time? How did Adam, Abraham, Moses, the prophets, and Yahoshua know when to keep the Shabbats and appointed times of Yah? We cannot know for certain, as none of us were there; however, we can draw on historical and biblical evidence to reach the conclusion:
They would not have relied on calendars devised by man! Rather, they would have simply looked up at the night sky, and utilized the guidelines set forth by Yah: 'And Yah said, "Let lights come to be in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and appointed times, and for days and years, and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and it came to be so." And Yah made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and the stars. And Yah set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And Yah saw that it was good.' ~Genesis 1: 14-18~ |

#1 The Fourth DayOne of the oldest time measuring devices was the sundial, (Illustration A and B). It was specifically used in ancient times to mark the hours within a day, according to the hourly passage of the Sun across the sky, in keeping with Genesis 1:14.
Of course sundials could not be used once the sun went down. Instead, direct observation of the lesser of the two Great Lights, would have served as the means for keeping track of the Shabbats and Appointed Times, the Moedim of Yah.
Our forefathers, would've noted the phases and position of the moon in the firmament above them. In other words, to keep the appointed times, the ancient Hebrews kept a 30-day observation of the lunar cycle.
Here are a few examples of them doing so:
1. In the days of Noah, a 30-day month, and a 360-day year was in effect.
Scriptural evidence: Genesis 7:11 and 7:24:
'In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second new moon, the seventeenth day of the new moon,
on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of the heavens were opened...'
'And the waters were mighty on the earth, one hundred and fifty days.'
Mathematical evidence: 150 days÷30 = 5mths. (30 days(1mth) x12 mths =360 days).
2. In the days of Mosheh, the hebrews observed a 30-day month.
Scriptural evidence: Numbers 20:29:
'And when all the congregation saw that Aharon was dead, all the house of Ysrayl wept for Aharon thirty days.'
Scriptural evidence: Deuteronomy 34:8
'And the children of Ysrayl wept for Mosheh in the desert plains of Mo'ab thirty days. And the days of
weeping and mourning for Moshe were completed.'
Mathematical evidence: 30 days (1mth) x12 mths = 360 days.
Also:
3. Dawid understood the importance of the monthly, or lunar count.
Scriptural evidence: Psalm 90:12
'Teach us to number our days, And let us bring the heart to wisdom.'
4. In the days of YeshaYah, Yah declared that the 30-day lunar month (new moon), and the 7-day (Shabbat),
lunar week, shall stand.
Scriptural evidence: Isaiah 66:22-23
"For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make stand before Me," declares Yah,
"so your seed and your name shall stand.
"And it shall be that from New Moon to New Moon, and from Shabbat to Shabbat, all flesh shall
come to worship before Me," declares Yah.
*Please note the significance Yah placed on learning the correct count in the above verses. So much so that, He capitalized 'New Moon' and 'Shabbat.'*
The Hebrews were not the only ancient civilization of that era to maintain a 30-day lunar month.
1. In ancient Babylon, a year consisted of 360 days, or 12 months - 30 days each.
2. An Assyrian decade consisted of 3600 days, a 30-day month, that commenced from new moon to new moon.
Mathematical evidence: 3600 days / 10 years / 12 mths = 30 days.
3. Ditto for the ancient Persian year.
4. Although the ancient Egyptian year was later changed to 365 days ( as documented in The Book Of Sothis, to name one reference),
originally it's length was 360 days also.
5. Ancient Roman, Chinese, and also the Brahman, and Hindu cultures of India, all originally observed a 30-day lunar month.
While it can be said that the above nations associated their lunar month with the pagan gods specific to their culture, it was the norm at that time to measure the days and seasons by the sun, and the passage of time by the moon.
The ancient Hebrews however, associated the lunar phases as a guideline for the signs and appointed times of Yah. To drive the significance home, Yah re-acquainted Mosheh and Aharon with the importance of observing a lunar month prior to bringing Yisra'el out of Egypt.
Scriptural evidence: Exodus 12:1-2.
'And Yah spoke to Mosheh and to Aharon in the land of Mitsrayim, saying, "This new moon is the beginning of new moons for you,
it is the first new moon of the year for you.'
This is Rosh Chodesh; or the beginning of a month. This is the True New Moon; occurring at the Beginning of the lunar cycle, as opposed to in the Middle of the lunar cycle. .
After 430 years in Egypt, Yisra'el was undoubtedly exposed to myriad pagan gods and forms of idolatry. Surely the Yisraelites were 'tainted' at the very least, and quite possibly may have forgotten the appointed times of Yah altogether. However Yah, in His loving kindness, chose to re-educate His people to His heavenly time clock. He explained in minute detail how mankind could be reconciled to Himself. He taught Mosheh and Aharon how to count the days of His appointed times:
Scriptural evidence: Exodus 12:18:
'In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the new moon, in the evening, you shall eat unleavened bread until the twenty-first day of the new moon in the evening.'
Also, Leviticus 23:1-8:
'And Yah spoke to Mosheh, saying, "Speak to the children of Yisra' el, and say to them, 'The appointed times of Yah,
which you are to proclaim as set-apart gatherings, My appointed times, are these:
'Six days work is done, but the seventh day is a Shabbat of rest, a set-apart gathering. You do no work, it is a Shabbat to Yah in all your dwellings.
'These are the appointed times of Yah, set-apart gatherings which you are to proclaim at their appointed times.
'In the first new moon, on the fourteenth day of the new moon, between the evenings, is the Pesah to Yah.
'And on the fifteenth day of this new moon is the Festival of Matzot to Yah - seven days you eat unleavened bread.
'On the first day you have a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.
'And you shall bring an offering made by fire to Yah for seven days. On the seventh day is a set-apart gathering, you do no servile work.' "
Another example of the importance of learning the correct count for Yah's Shabbats and appointed times, Leviticus 23:23-44. Please read it.
*Note that in all of the above scriptures, Yah painstakingly laid out in great detail the connection between counting the days correctly,
and his appointed times and shabbats. He even went so far (via those who were guided by Him via the Ruach HaKodesh),
as to italicize His Shabbats, and to capitalize His Feasts. There can be no doubt that, according to Yah, the keeping of His
Set-Apart days depends on the observance of the moon, and the correct count of days.*
I cannot stress this enough!
Without question, the appointed times and Shabbats, were determined by a lunar, monthly count. The question becomes: what phase of the moon do we utilize as 'the sign' to begin our count? The answer is simple, rational, and if you are obedient to Yah, not open for debate. You will either accept what is scriptural, or, you will not.
The Full Moon is the sign. The lunar phase appearing on the following night is the True New Moon; although it will appear full also.
The lunar phase that is commonly accepted today as the sign by which to determine the Appointed-Times, is the dark occulted moon. Via centuries of deception, the Dark Moon is referred to as the 'new moon.' And yet, think about it; it gives forth no light at all! How can it be a 'sign' for anything? How is it a beacon - as the word 'beacon' is defined? NASA, Jewish and Muslim beliefs and everyone who holds these groups as an 'authority', offer up the crescent moon as a substitute. However, one person may say 'this is the first crescent', while another says 'No! This is the first crescent.' Who's to say? Which is right?
The scriptures testify that Yah is not, the author of confusion. Yah Himself testified of the importance of the moon in His eyesight. Don't believe me? Then I refer you back to the beginning for the scriptural evidence and clarification:
'And Yah made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night and the stars.' ~Genesis 1:16~
Sidebar: This scripture destroys the 'theory' that the moon in and of its' self has no light; and that the sun
reflects light onto the moon. Or that on certain lunar phases the moon shines with a certain percentage of light
it receives from...what? The Sun? The last time I checked, the sun does not occupy the night sky! If it did, there would not
be night. Yah separated the Night from the Day, and ordained the Moon to rule one aspect, and the Sun to rule the other.
Furthermore, the Dark Moon 'follows' the sun during the day, and is therefore 'overshadowed,' and at night for the few hours
before it sets, it gives forth NO LIGHT AT ALL! (a quick jaunt through any astronomical website will confirm this).
The belief that the 'moonhasnolightofitsown' is a Heliocentric, worldly viewpoint, and I reject it outright. Not to mention, Genesis 1:16 refutes Heliocentrism entirely. Please, do not become upset with me. I didn't say it, Yah said it; so you either believe the Word of Yah, or you don't. You either believe that what goes forth from His mouth is Truth, or you don't. It is just that simple.
A dark hidden moon cannot be the beacon for anything. By its very nature, it defies the definition of the word 'beacon.' We cannot see it, nor can it 'rule the night,' as Yah ordained. The sky is dark. Hence the literary phrase: 'It was a dark and gloomy night'; the interpretation being, there was no aspect of the moon shining in the night sky. The dark lunar phase is in effect; and that phase occurs in the MIDDLE of the month. It is by no means 'NEW.' Matter of fact, it's not even 'OLD'. It is just 'Meh'...middle of the road, as it were. But I digress.
A Full Moon appears every 29.5 to 30 days; so saith NASA. If a month, according to the ancients (and to Pope Gregory!), is roughly every 29 - 30 days, then it should stand for reason that a Full Moon appears at the End of the month. So, if a Full Moon represents 'The End', then what immediately follows, must be, has to be, will always be, 'The Beginning'. You cannot possibly have the end of something, then have to wait another 15 days before there is a beginning. What was the space of time in between? The Twilight Zone?
Yah called the 'Beginning' phase, a New Moon; the beginning of a New Month.
Sidebar: The morning after the Full Moon is the correct New Moon Day., and is counted as Day # 1, of the Monthly Count.
It is Rosh Chodesh, which means: 'Head of the Month.' Strong's (H7218).
New Moon Day, or Rosh Chodesh as it is also called, is most Set-Apart unto Yahuah, and because it is, it is never included
in the Weekly Count towards the Shabbat. A Weekly count of 6 days is given to mankind to work. Only the 7th Day, the Shabbat.
and New Moon Day, are allotted as 'belonging' to Yahuah on His Heavenly Calendar.
When the moon rises again that evening it will still appear full, however it is truly beginning the Waning Gibbous phase; and it will be decreasing in light towards the dark moon; which will occur 14 to 15 days later, in the middle of the month. If you live where the night sky can be viewed without the impediment of city lights, this can easily be verified. Do not be deceived by NASA's definition of the 'new moon'. Nasa's version of the new moon is dark and hidden; occurring in the middle of the month, not at the beginning, as Yahuah has said.
In ancient pagan cultures, the occulted moon was known as a Black Moon, and has become a highly valued lunar phase in Wiccan cultures. Think about that. Since our childhood, HaShatan's emissaries have taught us to use the Dark Moon lunar phase, as a guideline to worship, and give praise to Yah. But isn't that just like haShatan? He will always subvert and corrupt the Laws of Yah. HaShatan's doctrine, in regards to the moon, its phases, and what we've now learned is important to Yahuah; is in reality, the exact opposite of Yahuah's truth. Give some serious thought to that. If Yahuah says: 'My witness in the heavens is Bright and Full of Light;' what would HaShatan say? I will tell you. He would say: 'No! It is Dark and gives forth no light of its own.' SELAH
Furthermore, if there appeared those who had the truth and were trying to awaken Yahuah's Chosen, then would come HaShatan's emissaries to convince the people: 'Do not listen to them, for they worship the moon;' which he knows, we know, we are forbidden to do. He has effectively beguiled us; and some of us will stand on this lie, until our dying day. But let us continue on.
Now once the dark moon occurs in the middle of the month, the lunar phases begin to Wax, or increase its light towards the Full Moon; becoming totally, 100% full and bright by the END of the month, in 29.5 to 30 days. Even NASA agrees with this. They cannot refute the ordained course Yah has set for the moon, as its length of days is immutable. However, it is the perception of the moon that has nurtured the lie. Once HaShatan was successful in giving us an alternate perception, the truth became the lie, and the lie became the truth. Religions have been founded on it. Wars have been fought over this lie.
The Full Moon is the sign by which we are to count our days. The full moon is the beacon which says 'Get ready to begin your count, a New Month is Beginning!' And, 'By it you shall number your days and keep my Appointed-Times,' (paraphrase mine). Begin to re-condition your mind. Undergo a paradigm shift:
The correct NEW MOON = NEW MONTH = Rosh Chodesh = the Beginning
The correct New Moon tells us when to begin our; 1). weekly count to the Shabbat and,
2). the monthly count to the next full moon.
The Shabbat is 'fluid', yet 'the count' of it remains constant and immutable; so much so, that since the Foundation of the World and The Creation, the Shabbat has always occurred on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th days of the month, according to Yah's Calendar. For more on this see #1 The Fourth Day

In summary, Yah understands, and loves His creation. Yah is also merciful in His understanding of Yisra'el. He gave mankind the Full Moon as a clear sign
that no one can question, or be able to debate over its appearance. It's either FULLY there, for all the world to see, or it's not. The Full Moon was placed in the firmament as the sign for Yahuah's Feasts and Appointed Times.
It is exactly, what it is.

Furthermore, if there appeared those who had the truth and were trying to awaken Yahuah's Chosen, then would come HaShatan's emissaries to convince the people: 'Do not listen to them, for they worship the moon;' which he knows, we know, we are forbidden to do. He has effectively beguiled us; and some of us will stand on this lie, until our dying day. But let us continue on.
Now once the dark moon occurs in the middle of the month, the lunar phases begin to Wax, or increase its light towards the Full Moon; becoming totally, 100% full and bright by the END of the month, in 29.5 to 30 days. Even NASA agrees with this. They cannot refute the ordained course Yah has set for the moon, as its length of days is immutable. However, it is the perception of the moon that has nurtured the lie. Once HaShatan was successful in giving us an alternate perception, the truth became the lie, and the lie became the truth. Religions have been founded on it. Wars have been fought over this lie.
The Full Moon is the sign by which we are to count our days. The full moon is the beacon which says 'Get ready to begin your count, a New Month is Beginning!' And, 'By it you shall number your days and keep my Appointed-Times,' (paraphrase mine). Begin to re-condition your mind. Undergo a paradigm shift:
The correct NEW MOON = NEW MONTH = Rosh Chodesh = the Beginning
The correct New Moon tells us when to begin our; 1). weekly count to the Shabbat and,
2). the monthly count to the next full moon.
The Shabbat is 'fluid', yet 'the count' of it remains constant and immutable; so much so, that since the Foundation of the World and The Creation, the Shabbat has always occurred on the 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th days of the month, according to Yah's Calendar. For more on this see #1 The Fourth Day

In summary, Yah understands, and loves His creation. Yah is also merciful in His understanding of Yisra'el. He gave mankind the Full Moon as a clear sign
that no one can question, or be able to debate over its appearance. It's either FULLY there, for all the world to see, or it's not. The Full Moon was placed in the firmament as the sign for Yahuah's Feasts and Appointed Times.
It is exactly, what it is.
